Every Thursday and Friday, our Community Room on Level 1 is home to the Arts On group. Today we hosted a view of their collection of works under the theme of Containment. Objects as diverse as action figures, medication boxes and vintage arcane memorabilia have been employed to portray various powerful spins on the theme. The exhibition is situated on the third floor immediately after exiting the lifts.

The group, in some form, has been a regular fixture here over the past 4 years. Numbers have swelled over the past few months; necessitating a change to it’s current two day a week slot. The group are currently planning another installation for the Autumn, and continue to produce work in a variety of media.

A nice picture of Phoenix Productions preparing for tonight’s performance of Let’s Go To The Movies: a family-friendly journey through a variety of films, from James Bond to Footloose and everything in between. This the fourth production that this group of local performers has staged at The Public, using space in the building for rehearsals, and working with the technical team to imaginative effect. They’ve even enlisted staff members to have cameo roles on occassion!

Yesterday, musicians from Sandwell Music and Arts Service and soloist Mendi Singh performed a piece for by Gareth Jones’s; a concerto devised for tabla and orchestra. It was a unique opportunity for the musicians involved to perform a fusion of Eastern and Western classical styles.
The piece was a commission by the Arts Council of England and was performed in front of an intimate audience in our Theatre. A live recording of the performance was also was captured. We hope to share it when we here more!

Alfie Smith Memorial Concert

On Friday evening, we hosted a special concert in memory of our very own Black Country legend, poet and entertainer, Alfie. It was a lovely evening of performance, poetry, spoken word and song; all of course with a distinctly Black Country flavour. Several members of Alfie’s family were in attendance, and were on hand to unveil a special plaque at the front of the building.

Thank you to Sue Hulse, Billy and Lozz, Brendan Hawthorne, The Ukulele Band and to all in attendance.
